Musical Analysis #1 of Pachelbel's Canon in D

Today I will be doing an analysis of three elements of music in Pachelbel's Canon in D. This song was composed by Johann Pachelbel between 1680-90. Since Pachelbel was a German composer the song was released in Germany in the 20th century.

For me and most people I know we enjoy the song for the chords and the melody that the chords put together. The song is so beautiful that when I hear it I am always awe struck. Hearing other people play the song makes me want to play it because I enjoy it so much. The song makes me happy and helps to calm me when I am stressed or having a busy day.

Melody and Chords:

This song has a melody unlike any other song. The organization of the notes and the continued repeat of chords makes this song flow. The chords bring a unique structure to the song and are the glue that holds everything together. They are slow in the beginning but as the song continues it gets faster. Not to be forgotten however are the ground bass notes that are played throughout the song and in the very beginning to introduce the song. "This “ground bass”, or musical pattern, repeats over and over until the end, while the higher parts go through different variations"(PianoTV, 2016). Even if I haven't heard the song in a while I always immediately recognize it because of these elements.

Timbre:

This song also has a unique timbre because it can be played by a variety of instruments. While the timbre of the song changes a lot between the violin and the piano, the song still sounds good. I personally think that the song is prettiest when being played with the piano and violin. "The sound source in this composition are definitely stringed instruments, and would be classified as an orchestra. The sound produced is definitely a mixture of blowing (i.e. flutes) and plucking because a lot of the instruments are stringed instruments" (Declan's Music Blog, 2014).

  2. I don't usually listen to classical music unless I am studying so I usually do not focus too much on it. I really like this song and enjoyed just paying attention and listening to it. I think that it is really cool this song can be played on many different instruments but I have a hard time imagining a version where it sounds better than this! One thing that I really appreciated about this song is how it kept me interested the whole time but felt very steady and relaxing.
